Why You Need a Food Hygiene Certificate in Singapore

If you’re working in the food and beverage industry in Singapore, holding a food hygiene certificate is not just beneficial—it’s a legal requirement. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) mandates that all food handlers must be certified to ensure food is prepared and served safely.

Obtaining a food hygiene and handling certificate ensures that you are equipped with the essential knowledge to maintain hygiene standards and prevent foodborne illnesses. This is especially important in safeguarding public health, as poor food safety practices can lead to serious outbreaks.

Beyond compliance, having this certificate can also boost your employability within the food services sector. It shows that you’re trained and committed to upholding high standards in food safety.

Refresher training is also required—food handlers must retake the course:

– By the 5th year from the date of first certification.
– Then, every 10 years thereafter.

  • Depending on the speed each learner takes to complete the assessment, the assessment may end later than the stipulated time.

Who Must Take the Food Hygiene and Handling Certificate Course?

The food hygiene and handling certificate course is compulsory for anyone involved in the preparation, handling, or service of food within an SFA-licensed food establishment. This certification ensures that individuals are equipped with the necessary skills to maintain hygiene standards and protect public health.

The course applies to a wide range of roles, including:

– Retail food handlers working in hawker stalls, food courts, restaurants, cafés, and coffee shops.
– Non-retail food handlers employed in central kitchens, food catering services, food factories, and institutional kitchens.
– Any personnel responsible for food storage, cooking, packaging, or distribution activities.

Whether you’re entering the food and beverage industry for the first time or switching roles within it, obtaining a valid food handler certificate in Singapore is essential for regulatory compliance. It also helps ensure workplace safety and enhances your professional credibility in the food services sector.
