Why Employers Must Ensure Food Handlers Take the Refresher Course
Under SFA food safety training compliance, food handlers working in SFA-licensed establishments must renew their certification within specific timeframes—by the 5th year from their initial training, and every 10 years thereafter. Failure to renew food hygiene certificate requirements on time may result in non-compliance during inspections.
Expired food hygiene certification during an SFA audit can lead to fines, disruption to operations, or even licence suspension. As such, it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure all food handlers remain compliant with the refresher schedule.
To support employers, Avanta Academy offers group training arrangements for businesses seeking to train multiple employees at once. Whether it’s for a single outlet or a chain of stores, our team can coordinate on-site or centre-based sessions that meet your company’s operational needs while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

2. How often do I need to renew my food hygiene certificate?
You must renew food hygiene certificate training by the 5th year from the date you first passed Level 1. After that, you’re required to take the refresher course every 10 years.
